Matthew Blackburn’s Experience at the 2024 Nunavut Trade Show

Published on September 25, 2024

From September 17th to 20th, Matthew Blackburn, one of our Senior Account Managers, attended the 31st Annual Nunavut Trade Show and Conference in Iqaluit.

Hosted by the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, the event brought together government officials, Inuit organizations, businesses, and entrepreneurs under the theme “Working Together – Shaping the Future of Nunavut.” The conference focused on Nunavut’s devolution agreement, which aims to give the territory greater control over its land, waters, and resources.

Matthew’s experience was a blend of networking, learning, and exploration. At the Arctic Winter Games Complex, where much of the event took place, he engaged with local businesses, government representatives, and industry leaders. Discussions around economic development, resource management, and clean energy dominated the sessions, underscoring the region’s efforts to balance growth with sustainability.

At the conference, Matthew connected with local artisans who showcased handcrafted products, including Inuit art and locally made soaps. The trade show floor buzzed with activity as local businesses displayed their work, highlighting the region’s creativity and entrepreneurship. Beyond the conference halls, Matthew immersed himself in Iqaluit’s local culture. During his downtime, Matthew visited an Arctic survival store gaining insight into how businesses in Iqaluit blend tradition with modern practices. A visit to a local brewery also gave him a taste of the region’s entrepreneurial spirit.

One of the trip’s highlights was a 10-kilometer hike along Iqaluit’s famous “Road to Nowhere,” where Matthew took in the vast, untouched tundra. This adventure, coupled with his visits to local establishments, provided a deep appreciation for the resilience of the people who thrive in the challenging Arctic environment.

Reflecting on his time at the trade show, Matthew was particularly struck by the collaborative atmosphere. Businesses, Inuit organizations, and government agencies were all working hand in hand to shape Nunavut’s future. The conference wasn’t just about economic discussions; it was about forging relationships and envisioning a sustainable path forward.

Matthew’s journey to the Nunavut Trade Show reinforced the importance of connecting with diverse communities and industries across Canada. His experience will play a key role in shaping our future collaborations and supporting northern businesses as they continue to grow and thrive.
