Shaw Centre was pleased to co-host Ottawa’s first ever 5 km interior run which took place on February 16, 2020. Despite the chilly day, 350 comfortably walked, jogged and sprinted through a course that included Shaw Centre and the adjacent Rideau Centre.

This unique event, part of Winterlude’s closing weekend, was brought to Ottawa by the innovative BougeBouge organization (the French verb ‘bouger’ means ‘to move’). This Montreal-based, not-for-profit social enterprise is on a mission to prevent physical dropout among adolescents, young families and retirees by bringing all these age groups together through active events in various communities.

In addition to the well-organized race, which featured staggered starts according to anticipated course times, the event also included various animation stations to reinforce the message of finding joy in movement. Shaw Centre was humming with activity as high-energy music pulsed while participants of all ages enjoyed indoor activities such as badminton, floor hockey, paddle tetherball, archery and more.

BougeBouge is working in numerous cities to keep people of all ages informed about the myriad benefits of active living, providing education and events to help individuals develop a sense of competence while making vital, engaged community life more sustainable. Watch for additional BougeBouge events in the National Capital Region in the coming months.
